Santa Cruz, CA — Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust (MBFT) is excited to announce a new partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank as part of the Community Seafood Program. January 24th will mark the first distribution of local seafood donated by MBFT to Second Harvest Food Bank, who will include this nutritious protein as part of their food relief provisions.

MBFT launched the Community Seafood Program in November 2020 to provide healthy, sustainably harvested seafood to local families, farmworkers, seniors, and others in need of food assistance, along with economic support to local fishermen, food workers, and seafood businesses. MBFT works with local seafood businesses, to purchase seafood from fishermen at a fair market rate and help coordinate delivery to several food relief partners in the region. With nearly 43,000 seafood meals provided to date, the program is improving equitable distribution of  local, nutritious fish protein for the community, and onto the plates of those who need it most.

MBFT’s other food relief partners include the Food Bank of Monterey County, Meals on Wheels of the Monterey Peninsula, Al and Friends, Big Sur Big Share, and Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes. Seafood business partners include Sea Harvest, Lusamerica, Ocean2Table, Real Good Fish, and H&H Fresh Fish. This new partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank extends the program’s reach further in Santa Cruz County, and is supported by funding in part through the Community Foundation Santa Cruz County..

MBFT hopes to continue expanding the Community Seafood Program and its impact. To learn more, please go to montereybayfisheriestrust.org/communityseafood, or attend one of MBFT’s Get Hooked Dinners, which directly benefit the Community Seafood Program, or donate here.
